The government submitted a proposal in June 2026 to establish a permanent Gem and Jewellery Experience Centre that would bring trading, tourism, and industry services under one roof.
Deputy Minister Abeysinghe argued that Sri Lanka cannot deliver a world-class buyer experience through temporary or rented facilities alone. The centre would complement annual fairs such as Gem City Ratnapura rather than replace them.
Details on location, funding, and timeline were not final at announcement. NGJA had previously discussed international centres with showrooms, laboratories, and export support, a similar vision with different naming.
For international visitors, a fixed centre would mean year-round access to certified stones and structured tours. For exporters, it is another signal that formal channels and visible infrastructure are policy priorities.
