Buyers demand lab-certified unheated stones; disclosure gap persists

Growing retail insistence on no-heat papers collides with treatment prevalence and inconsistent seller claims.

4 min read

Retail and collector buyers increasingly ask for laboratory reports stating no indications of heating before paying unheated premiums. The request is rational: ninety percent or more of market sapphire has seen heat at some stage.

Problems appear when sellers rely on verbal claims, outdated papers, or labs without advanced testing. Beryllium diffusion, subtle heat, and repolishing after treatment complicate disclosure. Fine Ceylon stones without reputable papers should not command unheated prices.

This shop's position is straightforward: state treatment on the listing, show the stone in motion, and supply certification when available. Buyers paying a premium deserve a premium report, not a handshake.

Industry-wide gaps will persist until regulators punish misdisclosure and until mid-market stones routinely travel with updated lab documents. Until then, buyer skepticism is healthy.
