Sri Lanka's Cabinet approved inclusion of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act, No. 50 of 1993, in the government's 2025 legislation programme on 28 April 2025. The amendment sits alongside updates to export development, enterprise, and crafts legislation under the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development.
The NGJA remains the sole authority for gem mining licences and industry regulation under the existing act. Amendments are expected to strengthen institutional capacity as Sri Lanka pursues higher gem and jewellery export revenue.
Industry participants will watch whether the revised act clarifies rough export rules, online licensing, and coordination with Customs. Text of the amendment was not final at Cabinet approval stage; parliamentary passage will determine practical effect.
